Katniss in tribute tube

Tribute tubes were glass cylinders that facilitated Hunger Games tributes' transport into the arena.[1]

Usage[]

In the catacombs beneath the arena, each tribute had an underground Launch Room where they were dressed in the arena uniform and readied by their stylist. After an uncertain amount of time, a pleasant female voice announced that it was time to prepare to launch. The tribute would then go stand on a metal plate, and the glass cylinder of the tribute tube lowered to keep them in place just before the platform lifted them into the arena.[1]

In the films, the tube was nearly soundproof; it muffled sound from the Launch Room to the tube, and vice versa.[2] This was something Katniss Everdeen only speculated on in the Catching Fire novel. Also, despite their glassy appearance, the tubes appeared to be very durable.[3]

History[]

The official recap footage of the 50th Hunger Games showed the point of view of an unnamed girl as she rose through her tribute tube into the arena.[4]

Katniss was first lifted through a tribute tube at the start of the 74th Hunger Games.[1] For the 75th Hunger Games the following year, the rising of her platform was slightly delayed so she could be forced to watch as Peacekeepers viciously beat Cinna and dragged him away.[3]

Trivia[]

  • The Capitol had other surefire ways of keeping tributes in place, like the immobilizing current used to keep them still as they were lifted into hovercraft and injected with their trackers.[1] As a result, it's possible that the tribute tube only exists for dramatic effect.
