"There is a simple network of wide tunnels that directly corresponds to the main street plan above, underlying the major avenues and cross streets. It's called the Transfer, since small trucks use it to deliver goods around the city."
Katniss Everdeen on the Transfer[src]

The Transfer was a special network of tunnels built underneath the Capitol, used by small trucks and cargo lorries to transport goods throughout the city. It ran directly underneath the Capitol's aboveground roads, and it was staffed in shifts by Avoxes.[1]

History[]

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes[]

At the time of the prequel, Coriolanus Snow described the Transfer as a "network of tracks and roadways built under the Capitol". When Marcus escaped from the Capitol Arena before the 10th Hunger Games, a displaced manhole cover suggested that he might have fled underground.[2] It was later confirmed that he'd been trapped in a remote level of the Transfer, where he was eventually apprehended.[3]

Mockingjay[]

As an Avox, Pollux was enslaved and forced to work underground for five years without seeing sunlight. His brother Castor was eventually able to pay for him to be able to work aboveground. The Transfer was mined with pods that were activated at night as a security measure.[1]

According to the Holo, the Transfer held less pods than the streets above during the Battle of the Capitol. This fact, combined with the need not to be seen while they were presumed dead, convinced Squad 451 to travel through the sewers[1] before eventually ascending to the Transfer. There, they were confronted by Peacekeepers and deadly lizard mutts.[4]

In the Transfer, Messalla was killed by a pod that melted the flesh off his body; Jackson and Leeg 1 died holding off mutts at a pod called the Meat Grinder; and Castor, Homes, and Finnick Odair were all decapitated by the mutts. Only Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, Peeta Mellark, Cressida, and Pollux survived the ordeal.[4]

Squad 451 fleeing the Meat Grinder in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

In the Mockingjay novel, Katniss never witnessed the Meat Grinder pod being triggered. However, in Mockingjay - Part 2, she and the rest of the squad ran away as it tore up the concrete floor behind them.[5]
  • Transfer scenes for Mockingjay - Part 2 were filmed in the Messedamm Underpass in Berlin, Germany.[6]
  • Out of the nine members of Squad 451 who died in the battle, six were killed in the Transfer: four soldiers and two members of the film crew.[4]
