The Meadow is a scruffy field on the outskirts of District 12, near the Seam. It lies just inside the fence and before the woods where Katniss Everdeen hunts.[1]

History[]

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes[]

In the prequel, Lucy Gray Baird was known to work on her music in the Meadow early in the morning, so as to avoid disturbing her neighbors. The Covey's goat, Shamus, grazed there,[2] and the Covey entered the woods from there as well,[3] though they didn't have to contend with the fence because it hadn't been built yet.

The Hunger Games trilogy[]

Katniss recounted that the last time she'd sung "The Hanging Tree" when she was seven, her mother had gotten very angry at her father. Frightened because Mrs. Everdeen never usually yelled, Katniss ran off to her only hiding spot: underneath a honeysuckle bush in the Meadow.[4]

In the depths of Mrs. Everdeen's depression, Katniss saw a dandelion in the schoolyard, and she was inspired to harvest dandelions with her sister Prim in the Meadow. They collected dandelion greens, stems, and flowers and used them to make salad.[5] When Katniss later ventured into the woods, the Meadow became her usual route because it was near her house.[1]

Reconstruction of District 12[]

After the Second Rebellion, the Meadow was dug up, and it became a mass grave for the people who died in the bombing of District 12.[6] Eventually the Meadow regrew, and twenty years after the war, Katniss watched her and Peeta's son and daughter play there together, unaware of what it used to be.[7]

Resources[]

Dandelions,[5] rue,[8] and honeysuckle[4] were all edible plants that grew in the Meadow. It was also a decent place for animals to graze, as Katniss said of Prim's goat Lady.[9]

Trivia[]

  • It's possible that the District 12 Meadow features in the song "Deep in the Meadow".[10]
  • Katniss said that the yellow flowers in the Meadow made her think of her fallen ally, Rue, who had been named after a yellow flower herself.[8] Katniss also sang "Deep in the Meadow" to her as she died.[10]
  • Katniss[1] and the Covey[2] both lived in the same part of the Seam near the Meadow, and they both let their goats graze there.
