A silver parachute was used to deliver sponsor gifts to tributes during later editions of the Hunger Games.[1]
History[]
Prior modes of delivery[]
Sponsor gifts were delivered for the first time in the 10th Hunger Games,[2] carried out via drone.[3] It is unknown whether Gamemakers immediately discontinued the use of drones after that year or if this was a more gradual change. It is also not known whether they tried other modes of delivery before switching over to parachutes.
Hunger Games[]
Silver parachutes were in use by the 65th Hunger Games at the latest, when a parachute gave Finnick Odair the trident that won him his victory.[4]
City Circle bombing[]
In the last days of the Battle of the Capitol, refugees sought asylum in the City Circle, and a group of children was positioned outside the President's mansion to deter a rebel assault. On the final day of the conflict, a hovercraft with the Capitol insignia dropped silver parachutes into the crowd. By this time, silver parachutes had become synonymous with aid, so children rushed to grab what they believed would be gifts from the Capitol. This proved fatal when the bombs attached to these parachutes detonated. Many children were injured or outright killed, and a second explosion killed the Peacekeepers and medics that came to their aid.[5]
President Coriolanus Snow later revealed to Katniss Everdeen that this bombing was carried out by the rebels, under orders from District 13's President Alma Coin.[6]
Description[]
The parachutes were made of a silver fabric[1] that Katniss once described as silk.[7] In the films, the parachutes also let out beeping noises to help tributes locate them.[8][9][10]
Trivia[]
- After the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss kept the spile and Peeta Mellark's pearl wrapped up in one of the parachutes they received.[11]
