Biography[]
50th Hunger Games[]
Silka was part of the Career pack in these Games.
During the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell, the Capitol demanded that twice the number of tributes be reaped for the event.[3] This year, Silka Sharp was one of two girls representing District 1, alongside Panache Barker, Carat, and Loupe.[4]
Chariot rides[]
Silka had gotten along badly with Maysilee Donner in the locker room before the chariot rides, leading Maysilee to insult her outfit in front of the other tributes. Silka made to attack her, but was stopped by a Peacekeeper.[5] After Louella McCoy was killed in the chaos of the chariot parade, Silka dismounted her own chariot. When the horses refused to keep moving despite Panache's insistence, Silka removed one of her shoes and beat the outside horse until she drew blood, then was knocked to the ground by the horse's kick.[4]
Interviews[]
Silka was the first tribute to be interviewed, wearing a long green dress. She bragged to Caesar Flickerman about her size and strength, her ability with an axe, and her receiving a training score of ten.[1]
Arena[]
Silka's podium was directly to the right of Haymitch's podium.[6] Silka was part of a pack of sixteen Career tributes. This alliance was likely responsible for most of the eighteen bloodbath deaths. They claimed supplies from the Cornucopia, including the only safe food and drink in the arena, and for the first three days, they scoured the mountain area for potential victims. During this time, a number of tributes died to the arena's many poisonous substances. On the fourth day, a volcanic eruption killed another dozen tributes, including half the Careers. At this point, Silka was one of thirteen total tributes left alive. The lava flow forced them into the forest, possibly separating her from her four allies. She managed to survive despite the mutts and poisons.[2]
On the sixth day, three Gamemakers were mopping and taking care of the oozing slime on the forest floor of the arena. When Haymitch Abernathy, Maysilee Donner, Silka, and Maritte came across them, the Gamemakers tried to flee to Sub-A, but all were killed. One had a trident thrown at him by Maritte, another was attacked by one of Maysilee's darts, and the third plummeted to her death after she leaped headfirst into Sub-A, cracking her head on the concrete. Silka was shocked when she saw Maysilee and Maritte's actions, and Maysilee criticized her for sucking up to the Capitol in a sad effort to win the Games. She then said she was going to kill Maritte, before a bomb was sent by a hovercraft and separated the tributes.[7]
While Haymitch was taking care of Wellie in a tree, Silka was sobbing at the foot of the tree. Haymitch threw Silka some chocolate that he had received from sponsors. She scampered away in the night, presumably ashamed that she had shown such emotion. Haymitch supposed District 1 didn't reward its tributes for showing humanity. He left Wellie armed with Maysilee's dart gun, loaded with a single poisoned dart. Haymitch returned after receiving a sponsor gift containing what he anticipated to be poisoned milk from President Snow (which he discarded), and an ornate picnic basket. He was met with the sight of a decapitated Wellie, whose body lay in a heap - her head in Silka's left hand, dripping blood onto the forest floor. Silka had decapitated her with her axe. When confronted by Haymitch, Silka claimed Wellie attacked her, which was when he noticed a poison blow dart hanging harmlessly from Silka's sleeve.[8]
Death[]
Silka made it to the final two, at which point she fought Haymitch Abernathy, one of the male tributes from District 12, in hand-to-hand axe combat. Both sustained nearly fatal wounds in their battle; Haymitch gouged out her eye with his knife, and she disemboweled him with her axe. He had to hold his intestines in while he fled. She chased him to a cliff at the edge of the arena, cornering him, and threw her axe. But, just then Haymitch collapsed on the ground, narrowly dodging the attack. Due to the severity of his wounds, she thought she could outlast him even without her weapon, but Haymitch knew the axe would be flung back by the force field protecting the arena's generator. It was; the axe lodged itself in her head. She initially refused to die, emitting a "strangled gurgle,"[8] but ultimately succumbed to her injuries, leaving Haymitch as the victor.[2]
Physical description[]
Silka is described as being "bigger than Haymitch and just as fast".[2] She was over 6 feet tall.[9]
Throughout the chariot parade, training, and the games themselves, she was primarily dressed in "snot-green," to represent her district.
Personality[]
She is described to be very confident. Despite still having the basic arrogance and lack of remorse of the typical Career Tribute, she was devastated at the death of her final ally Maritte.
Etymology[]
"Silka" may be derived from silk, a natural fiber and textile. Sharp is an English surname,[10] which could relate to her ferocity in the Hunger Games.
Trivia[]
- She was the only known tribute outside of District 7 and District 12 who used an axe in the Games.
