Sid Abernathy

Sid Abernathy was the younger brother of Haymitch Abernathy, and their mother's second son.[2] He was 10 years old at the time of the 50th Hunger Games.[1]

Biography[]

Sid lived in the Seam of District 12 with his mother and older brother, Haymitch. He was born sometime around the 40th Hunger Games. In his childhood, his father perished in a coal mine fire.[1]

The morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, Sid woke up his brother Haymitch to wish him a happy birthday, and so Haymitch could "get to the woods at daylight."[1]

Since Haymitch was now sixteen years old,[2] he was one of four tributes reaped for the 50th Hunger Games or second Quarter Quell. Haymitch managed to lead his final opponent, a District 1 female, to the edge of the arena and use its force field to launch her own axe back at her.[3] He was subsequently crowned as District 12's second victor.[1]

Death[]

Two weeks after his victory, Sid, his mother, and Haymitch's girlfriend, Lenore Dove, were killed as punishment for his game-winning stunt, which had made the Capitol look foolish. Haymitch would return home to District 12 to find the family home burning, learning from those nearby that Sid and his mother were both inside, being burned alive. He raced for the house, attempting to either save them or die with them, only to be pulled back by Blair and Burdock Everdeen. Asterid March then served him sleep syrup which knocked him out for over a day.[4] The Capitol ruled their deaths an accident.[5] Haymitch recounted these events to Katniss Everdeen twenty-five years later.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Sid was an innocent and sweet ten-year-old boy who looked up to his older brother, Haymitch. Sid was also said to be energetic and a morning person as he woke his brother up early on his birthday. Sid was loyal to Haymitch, helping him do chores and deliver gifts to his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird.

Physical Description[]

In the film, Sid had wavy blond hair and blue eyes. He wore a white button-up and blue jeans on the day of the Reaping.

Trivia[]

  • According to Haymitch, Sid loved stars and constellations.[6]
