Ripper dealing with Katniss.

Ripper was a one-armed woman who sold white liquor at the Hob. She is portrayed by Taylor St. Clair in the film adaptation Catching Fire.

Ripper was a coal miner who lost her arm in a mine accident, but was able to think of a way to escape and survived. After the mine accident, she sold white liquor at the Hob. Haymitch Abernathy, District 12's second victor, purchased most of his liquor from her, as did Cray, one of District 12's Head Peacekeepers.

In Catching Fire, Peeta Mellark forbade Ripper to sell alcohol to Haymitch and Katniss Everdeen after the two of them get drunk when they learn that they will have to go back into the Hunger Games due to the requirements of the 3rd Quarter Quell. Ripper is seen by Katniss when Romulus Thread attacked District 12. Having an injured eye, Katniss tended to her, while Thread tried to attack a nearby civilian and was attacked by Gale Hawthorne. Katniss presumably guided Ripper to safety before arriving at the Town Square, where Gale is being whipped by Thread.

She is presumed to have died when The Capitol dropped the firebombs on District 12 as she is not mentioned to be among the group of citizens who escaped to District 13.

  • In the film, Ripper had both of her arms instead of just having one.
  • Ripper may have been named after a coal mining term, specifically "men who remove the rock above the coal seam and set rings (arches) to raise the height of the gate or road as the coal face advances".
