- "Like she says, a positive attitude is ninety-seven percent of the battle."
- —Proserpina Trinket to Haymitch Abernathy and Maysilee Donner[src]
Proserpina "Prosie" Trinket was a Capitol University student who was a member of the prep team for Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games. She was Effie Trinket's younger sister. She studied fashion and styling, with an explicit focus on tribute presentation.[3] She and Vitus, her fellow underclassman and prep team member, were set to "move up" to better districts and prep assignments after the Quell.[4]
Biography[]
Proserpina grew up in the Capitol, alongside her older sister Effie Trinket. During her schooling years, Effie was president of the Capitol Cohorts Chapters and created the Spring Saturnalia, an annual Capitol party, which Vitus later described as “the best party of the year”.[5]
50th Hunger Games[]
Preparing for the parade[]
- "I'm Proserpina, and this is Vitus. We’re your prep team, and we’re here to make you gorgeous!"
- —Proserpina to Haymitch[src]
Proserpina and her prep team partner, Vitus, entered Haymitch’s cubicle to begin grooming him for the Games. Their goal was to make him “gorgeous but fierce” to attract sponsors. Although they were officially part of his prep team and therefore unable to send gifts, Proserpina noted that her great-aunt planned to sponsor him.[1]
She and Vitus were underclassmen at the University and had no say in their district assignments, though they had two more years to “move up.” Throughout the session, Proserpina kept Haymitch’s spirits up, calling him “cute,” defending Magno Stift (their stylist), and promising no accidents since reptile fashion had been banned this year.[1]
When Vitus rambled, Proserpina reined him in and kept the session on track. She initiated the grooming process by suggesting they start with body hair removal and personally took the required “before and after” photos, noting that she and Vitus would receive an incomplete score without them. Together, she and Vitus shove Haymitch’s body hair and beard with electric razors, but respect his request to keep his nails long “in case he needs his claws.” Haymitch wondered if she saw him more as an animal than a person.[1]
He let them finish their photo documentation, finding Proserpina and Vitus more responsive to his needs than expected. As they leave, she offered him a linty peppermint drop.[1]
Preparing for interviews[]
Before the interviews, Proserpina bursted into the apartment in full panic, reporting that she and Vitus found their assigned stylist, Magno Stift, violently ill and raving in his apartment—possibly due to the long-rumored toad venom licking. While Vitus rambled about psychedelic frogs, Proserpina clapped her hands over her mouth, horrified at having said too much, and spiraled into a meltdown about failing her University assignment.[3]
When Wiress suggested the tributes wear black in the stylist’s absence, Proserpina recoiled, exclaiming, “We don’t wear black! It’s too depressing!” before bursting into tears and speed-dialing her older sister Effie. She sobbed into the phone, convinced that she was doomed, and flung herself into a chair next to a burnt-orange telephone in true Capitol drama fashion.[3]
After a short cry and a few spoons of strawberry ice cream, Proserpina returned with Effie’s advice: that it wasn't her fault, and that she should just do her best, and that if she was unfairly graded, she could appeal to the University Board—because Effie knew everyone on it from her time as student social planner.[3]
Her oblivious confidence shocked the tributes. When Maysilee Donner sarcastically said she'd keep that in mind “in the arena,” Proserpina missed the jab entirely and cheerfully offered more ice cream, insisting, “I really think it will help you.” This memory resurfaced later for Haymitch after Maysilee’s death, when he received a parachute bearing strawberry ice cream and black coffee—her favorite drink. As he ate, the memory of Proserpina blubbering about her grade, and Effie telling her that “a positive attitude is ninety-seven percent of the battle,” drifted back to him. He recalled Maysilee’s dry retort: “I’ll try to keep that in mind in the arena. More ice cream?".[2]
Although she was deeply distressed over her grades, Proserpina remained almost entirely disconnected from the fact that the tributes she was prepping were about to face death.[3] She was focused on grades, clothes, and eyeliner timelines while chaos unfolds around her—including Drusilla drinking in the kitchen and a missing stylist who may or may not be dead.[3]
Proserpina later threw herself into Effie’s arms, weeping in relief as her sister arrived to save the day. Effie, who affectionately called her "Prosie", comforted her, declaring that she wouldn't let her “baby sister — or her friends” fail because of Magno Stift’s disappearance.[2]
As Effie unpacked formal wear from Great-Aunt Messalina's vintage collection, Proserpina excitedly chirped, “Great-Aunt Messalina! She never throws anything out!”. She was visibly thrilled when the tributes were successfully dressed, watching the prep teams burst into cheers and tears.[2] She played a supporting but lively role in the transformation, encouraging the makeover energy and beaming with pride when Drusilla was floored by the result. When Drusilla demanded Effie come backstage and take full credit for the tributes’ stunning new looks, Proserpina enthusiastically nudged her sister forward, saying, “My sister!”.[2]
Before the tributes left, she shoved a makeup box into Effie’s hands, saying, “Touch-ups!” Always eager to assist but slightly out of sync with the gravity of the situation, Proserpina remained focused on grades, appearances, and Capitol theatrics, blissfully unaware that her panicked styling emergency is another cog in the machinery of death. [2]
Post-Games[]
Proserpina made an appearance during the Victor’s Ceremony beneath the Capitol stage. As Haymitch was shackled and shoved into position, he spotted Proserpina and Vitus jittering with excitement atop one of the metal lift plates. The pair fussed over each other’s makeup, clearly thrilled to be featured. Despite Haymitch’s trauma and the brutal aftermath of the Games, Proserpina remained in high spirits, more focused on the pageantry than the pain. When Caesar Flickerman introduced the team, Proserpina and Vitus ascended, clapping for themselves, reveling in their moment of Capitol recognition.[6]
At the Victor's After-Party, held in the ballroom of the president's mansion, Proserpina made a brief appearance alongside Vitus. The two were tipsy, pink-faced, and giddy, stopping by to congratulate Haymitch with Capitol-flavored enthusiasm—excited and entirely unaware of his trauma.[7]
She appeared to be enjoying the success of their assignment, seemingly satisfied that her styling work (and university grade) paid off. Proserpina didn't linger—she and Vitus vanished back into the party crowd, leaving Haymitch to navigate the rest of the evening mostly alone. [7]
The morning of Haymitch's Victory Tour, Proserpina and Vitus were unable to stomach Haymitch’s appearance, so Effie prepared him until they could resume their duties. Proserpina was still part of his prep team at this point, and her involvement remained tied to grooming, wardrobe, and public presentation, continuing her role as a Capitol student entrenched in appearances, even in the face of his grief.[8]
If Proserpina was still a member of a prep team by the Second Rebellion, she would have been executed.[9] However, this was unlikely, as she was only serving as a prep team member for the University.
Physical description[]
Proserpina was a "girl with puffballs of magenta hair", not looking "much older" than Haymitch.[1] She never wore black, considering it too depressing.[3]
Personality and traits[]
Proserpina's bubbly detachment to Haymitch was never directly cruel—but in the context of Haymitch’s suffering, her enthusiasm became one last reminder of how utterly blind the Capitol youth could be to the violence they’re complicit in.[6] Haymitch reflected that she simply had “a lot of unlearning to do,” a line that captures her as a product of the Capitol’s blind, well-meaning harm.[2]
Relationships[]
Effie Trinket[]
Effie was Proserpina’s older sister and the person Proserpina turned to in moments of panic or crisis. She affectionately referred to her as “Prosie”[2] and clearly took on a protective, older sibling role.
Their bond was first shown when Proserpina, overwhelmed by Magno Stift’s disappearance, called Effie sobbing, fearing she'd fail her University assessment. Effie reassured her that it wasn't her fault, encouraged her to do her best, and reminded her she could appeal to the University Board—especially since Effie knew everyone on it from her time as student social planner.[3]
Effie arrived soon after, and Proserpina flung herself into her sister’s arms, weeping in relief. Effie comforted her and assured everyone she wouldn't let her “baby sister — or her friends” fail due to someone else’s incompetence. When Effie produced black mourning clothes from their family’s vintage collection, Proserpina excitedly praised her and helped rally the other prep teams.[2]
Later, as the tributes prepared to leave, Proserpina enthusiastically pushed Effie forward when Drusilla tried to take credit for their new looks, proudly claiming, “My sister!”. Before the team departed, she handed Effie a makeup box and urged her to do “touch-ups,” clearly trusting her to handle the finishing touches and wanting her to shine.[2]
Their relationship was marked by a mix of familial love, dependence, and shared Capitol values, with Effie acting as both mentor and rescuer in Proserpina’s eyes.
Family[]
Proserpina had a living paternal great-aunt, Messalina Trinket, and a deceased great-uncle, Silius Trinket.
Etymology[]
Proserpina is the Roman counterpart of Persephone, the Greek goddess of spring and the underworld.
Trivia[]
- She shares some similarities with Primrose Everdeen from the original trilogy. Both their first names start with the letter "P", the youngest in their family, have an older sister and they are the reason how their older sister got involved with the Hunger Games due to helping their younger sisters out.
- Persephone Price is named after the Greek counterpart of Proserpina's namesake goddess.
