"They watched as their neighbor Nero Price, a titan in the railroad industry, carved the leg from the maid, sawing back and forth with a terrifying knife until the limb came free. He wrapped it in the skirt he ripped from her waist and then bolted down the side street that led to the back of his town house."
—Nero Price cutting off the leg of a maid[src]

Nero Price worked in the railroad industry and was a neighbor of Coriolanus Snow and Tigris.[1] He had a daughter named Persephone Price, who attended the Academy and served as a mentor in the 10th Hunger Games to Mizzen, the male tribute from District 4.[2]

Biography[]

Price was a titan in the railroad industry who lived with his daughter in a town house on the Corso. Like many Capitol citizens, they fell upon hard times during the First Rebellion; at one point, Coriolanus Snow and Tigris witnessed him carving off the leg of a young maid from the Crane family for food. Although Coriolanus never spoke of it, the memory was forever burned into his mind, and the act horrified him.[1]

Etymology[]

He was named after the Roman emperor Nero, who had a reputation for cruelty and debauchery that has been questioned in contemporary historical circles.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Nero is one of two confirmed cannibals in the series, the other being Titus. Both are featured in scenes that took place before the book they were mentioned in.
    • Furthermore, both are connected to railroads. Nero is a titan in the railroad industry, and Titus hails from District 6, which is the railroad district.
  • In the film, Nero was only listed in the credits as "Respectable Man".[4]
  • The actor originally chosen for the role of Nero had gotten a "monk haircut" for a different role and no longer looked the part, so it was recast.[5]
