- "Today we celebrate the brave men and women that live and breathe their districts. Today we are one Panem."
- —President Coriolanus Snow introducing the District Heroes
Lily Elsington is a young girl from District 12 who was selected to become a District Hero.[1]
Biography[]
Lily, only 6, captures the spirit of the next generation of Panem. She was chosen to become District Hero as she is ready, willing, and eager to fuel the Panem of tomorrow.[1] It is unknown whether Lily survived the bombing of District 12.[2]
Physical description[]
Lily has blonde hair and blue eyes. In her District Hero portrait, she wears black leather boots, faded jeans, a green sweater, and an aged brown jacket. Lily's skin and clothes are covered with coal dust from the mines. She also has a gas mask in her lap and a miner's helmet beside her.[1]
Etymology[]
Lily is a feminine given name directly derived from the flower. Like many District 12 citizens, her name is drawn from nature. Lilies traditionally symbolize innocence and purity, and they are often used at funerals.
Trivia[]
- On June 19th, 2014, Capitol Couture released seven portraits of District Heroes as advertisements for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. These were original characters, independent from the books or films, serving as pro-Capitol propaganda for each of their respective districts.[3]
- Lily's blonde hair and blue eyes suggest that she may be from a merchant family,[4] so it's unlikely that she or her family would be employed as coal miners. Additionally, children under 18 do not work in District 12's mines.[5]
- Fewer than a dozen of District 12's merchant class survived the bombing, so Lily could have been one of its victims.[2]
- Lily is the youngest District Hero.[3]
