- "Don't let them use you, Sarshee. Don't let them paint the posters with your blood. Not if you can help it."
- —Haymitch Abernathy's father to Sarshee Whitcomb[src]
Haymitch Abernathy's father, called "Pa" by Haymitch, was the father of Haymitch and Sid Abernathy.[1]
Biography[]
Mr. Abernathy was born to a family that used to be rebels.[1] He worked in the coal mines of District 12. He married Willamae Abernathy and had two sons. They were also going to have twin girls, but they died when they were born too early. Haymitch heard his father crying one night shortly after their loss.[2]
After the death of his boss Lyle Whitcomb, he looked out for his orphaned daughter Sarshee Whitcomb. When she was reaped into the Hunger Games, he visited her with his wife and Haymitch to say goodbye and advised her not to let the Capitol use her.[3]
Haymitch's father died in a coal mine fire, leaving his wife to care for their two young children. He was buried in the miner's graveyard, in the family plot. After he died, rumors spread that he died in a seditious event at sabotaging the mines, or that he and his crew were targeted by the Capitol for being "a pack of troublemakers."[1]
Personality and traits[]
According to Haymitch, Mr. Abernathy was quite intelligent, but kept to himself and didn't share all of his ideas. He was distrustful of people who shared every idea they had.[4] He was rumored to be quite rebellious,[1] and this may be evidenced in his words to Sarshee before she went to the Capitol.[3]
