Gaius Breen was a male resident of the Capitol and a student of the Academy. He was one of 24 top-performing seniors at the Academy selected to be a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games. He was assigned the male tribute from District 9, Panlo.
Biography[]
Gaius accompanied his tribute, Panlo, on a tour of the Capitol Arena when the arena was rocked by bombs which been planted by rebels. He was hospitalized for critical injuries, having lost both of his legs.[1] He passed away not long afterwards, during the 10th Hunger Games.[2]
His death was announced by Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Head Gamemaker of the 10th Hunger Games. As a special punishment, she sent a drone into the Capitol Arena with snake mutts that she had created.[3] After the snake mutts were released, Lepidus Malmsey collected stories about Gaius from the other mentors, and everybody had a joke or funny story to share.[4]
Film adaptation[]
In The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, he survived the bombing without being hospitalized, and Felix Ravinstill died in his place.[5]
Personality and traits[]
Gaius was considered a "Citadel brat" and was known for having an endless supply of jokes,[1] having once told Coriolanus Snow a joke about how many rebels it took to tie a shoe.[2] According to Coriolanus, Gaius hadn't had an enemy in the world, and because of this, he was easy to eulogize.[3]
Etymology[]
Gaius was an especially common given name in ancient Rome, such as with Gaius Julius Caesar.
