- —President Coriolanus Snow introducing the District Heroes
Elias Haan is a lumberjack from District 7 who was selected to become a District Hero.[1]
Biography[]
Elias was chosen to become a District Hero presumably because he believes in District 7's mission to respect the greater forces of nature. He has kept the axe handed down to him by his great-grandfather as a reminder of the hardships he and his district have overcome.[1]
Physical description[]
Elias has brown eyes, brown hair and a short beard. He is also very muscular, has multiple tattoos along his arms and chest, and he is an amputee, having had one leg amputated below the knee. In his District Hero portrait, he wears leather boots and jeans, and a red flannel shirt lies on the bench beside him. He also has a carved wooden prosthesis that he has removed for the photo.[1]
Etymology[]
Elias is the Greek equivalent of Elijah, meaning "My God is Yahweh". Haan is the Dutch spelling of the German surname Hahn.
Trivia[]
- On June 19th, 2014, Capitol Couture released seven portraits of District Heroes as advertisements for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. These were original characters, independent from the books or films, serving as pro-Capitol propaganda for each of their respective districts.[2]
- He is the second character from District 7 to have a religious name. The first is Johanna Mason.
