A drone is a small flying device used to deliver sponsor gifts to tributes during the Hunger Games. They were first used in the 10th Hunger Games.[1]

History[]

Creation[]

The idea of drones came into play with the help of Coriolanus Snow, who suggested the idea of sponsors being able to buy food that would then be delivered to their tribute of choice in the arena.[1] In the Control Room, Gamemakers were later seen testing drone prototypes.[2]

10th Hunger Games[]

The first drone use in the 10th Hunger Games occurred on the first day, when a bottle of water was sent to Lamina. However, five minutes passed before a drone arrived, only for it to crash into the crossbeam and fall to the ground. A replacement drone was sent ten minutes later.[3]

Afterward, Circ and Teslee, the two tributes from District 3, emerged from the tunnels to inspect the broken drones. They reattached the wires and took the drones back to the barricade, also carrying bread and water that had been dropped by two other drones. Shortly following this, Felix Ravinstill sent two bottles of water to Dill, although they were stolen by Treech.[3] Sol was sent food as soon as she emerged, but was killed by Mizzen, Coral, and Tanner before the drones could reach her.[4] Lysistrata Vickers and Coriolanus sent countless bottles of water into the arena to trigger Jessup's hydrophobia after he contracted rabies, protecting Lucy Gray Baird.[5]

The next day, Lamina collected provisions from six drones; Mizzen, Coral, and Tanner shared the breakfast their mentors provided them; and Teslee retrieved another fallen drone.[6] Hilarius Heavensbee later tried to send Wovey food and water, but she died soon after the drones arrived. That same day, an oversized drone flew into the arena carrying a tank full of rainbow snake mutts, which it released from a height of about ten yards.[7]

Treech and Reaper Ash were sent food after the snakes were killed. Once drones began to approach Mizzen with his own food, Teslee showed up with an altered drone and launched it into the air, revealing a cable that connected the drone's base to her wrist. Her hacked drone blocked the other drones' homing direction and caused them to bump into Mizzen, eventually killing him when he lost his balance and fell from the beam. Teslee then reeled in her drone and hugged it. However, she was soon killed by Treech, who collected the gifts Urban Canville had meant to send her. The last known supplies sent via drone were from Coriolanus to Lucy Gray, who stowed the food in the pockets of her dress.[8]

Film adaptation[]

In The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the first drone was sent to Lamina quickly, but a replacement drone never arrived after it fell. Later, instead of Circ and Teslee using a modified drone as a weapon, Coriolanus requested several bottles of water to be sent via drone to Lucy Gray, taking advantage of their dangerous, unpredictable nature to distract the pack closing in on her and allowing his tribute to escape. Requests for deliveries also went through a computer at each mentor's desk rather than a communicuff.[9]

Discontinuation[]

Sometime after the 10th Hunger Games, the use of drones in the Games was apparently discontinued; however, it is unknown whether this was an immediate or gradual change. In later years, sponsor gifts were delivered to tributes by silver parachutes instead.[10]

Description[]

Drones found their recipients via facial recognition and could only carry one item at a time,[2] which they held in their claws. To deliver a gift using a drone, mentors could simply double-click on a food item from the list on their communicuff.[11] Although the drones' response time was initially very slow, it improved upon each new request.[5]
