- "Panem is one of the most advanced nations in mankind's history, thanks to the efforts of District 3. Its computers keep us all connected and its electronic gadgets keep us all entertained."
- —Description from The Hunger Games: Tribute Guide[src]
District 3 is one of the 13 districts of Panem. Its main industry is technology, and people manufacture televisions, computers, and other electronics.
History[]
About ten years before the events of Mockingjay, victor Beetee Latier "essentially redesigned the underground network that transmits all the programming" in the nation.[1]
Aftermath of the 74th Hunger Games[]
During the Victory Tour, the people of Districts 3, 4, and 8 expressed "genuine elation" at the sight of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, "and under the elation, fury," crying out for vengeance.[2] Also, by the day before the reading of the Quell card, the district was in revolt, resulting in a shortage of electronic gadgets for Capitol citizens.[3]
75th Hunger Games[]
At the time of the third Quarter Quell, the tributes from Districts 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 were all involved in a rebel plan to protect Katniss and break out of the 75th Hunger Games arena.[4]
Second Rebellion[]
Beetee's contributions were instrumental to the rebels' Airtime Assault: the airing of propos in the districts and, later, in the Capitol as well, to inform and energize rebels nationwide.[1] Once Katniss's propo after the hospital bombing of District 8 aired across Panem, reinvigorated rebels were able to take control of Districts 3 and 11, with "inroads in several other districts as well".[5]
Beetee also played an important strategic role in the Battle of District 2 alongside Gale Hawthorne, devising the plan to bury the Nut with avalanches.[6] This strategy would lead to a rebel victory in the district, decidedly turning the tide of the war against the Capitol.[7] However, Beetee and Gale were also the minds that created the strategy later implemented in the City Circle bombing.[8][9][10]
All but one of District 3's victors were killed during the war and the Victors' Purge. Beetee was the only survivor.[10]
Culture[]
District 3's traditional bread comes in the form of bite-sized, square-shaped rolls.[11]
Industry[]
Children in District 3 learn audio editing techniques in school,[11] and tributes appear to have practical skills with wiring and programming various electronic devices. This makes it likely that they, unlike children in District 12,[12] are expected to work in their district's industry before they turn 18. Additionally, despite District 6 being the district responsible for transportation, Katniss mentions that District 3 manufactures automobiles.[13]
Known tributes[]
Due to District 3's industry, tributes are often clever and skilled with electronics. While this is not always useful in the brutal, mock-natural environments of the Hunger Games arena, it can have advantages. For example, Teslee rewired sponsor gift delivery drones to swarm Mizzen; Beetee rigged an electrical trap with wire[12] that electrocuted six tributes at once;[14] and the male tribute in the 74th Hunger Games was able to rewire land mines from the tributes' launch platforms to protect the Careers' supplies.[15] From the tributes we've seen, on average, female tributes place 9th and male tributes place 5th.
Tributes[]
- Circ - Male tribute in the 10th Hunger Games. Bitten by venomous snake mutts. Placed 7th out of 24.[16] In the film he was killed after Coral threw a trident into his chest, placing 17th.[17]
- Teslee - Female tribute in the 10th Hunger Games. Axed in the skull by Treech, placing 4th.[18] In the film she was stabbed by Mizzen in the Cornucopia bloodbath, placing 16th.[17]
- District 3 male (73rd HG) - Died of an unknown cause.[19]
- District 3 male (74th HG) - Killed when Cato snapped his neck on the eighth day, placing 9th.[20]
- District 3 female (74th HG) - Killed in the Cornucopia bloodbath.[21]
Victors[]
In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Beetee and Wiress were shown as being District 3's only living victors at the reaping for the third Quarter Quell.[14]
- Beetee Latier - Victor of a previous Hunger Games, and tribute and survivor of the 75th Hunger Games. After the war, he was the last surviving victor from District 3.[10]
- Wiress - Victor of an unknown Games, and tribute in the 75th. Died on the second day when Gloss slit her throat.[12]
Location and geography[]
According to the map of Panem featured in The Hunger Games Adventures, District 3 is located in the eastern part of the continent, centered around the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota. It is bordered by Districts 12 (to the east), 8 (to the south), 9 (to the west), and 6 (to the north). The district contains many factories for the production of electronic devices.
Trivia[]
- Beetee, Wiress and the District 3 male (74th HG) were all described by Katniss as having ashen skin, so this is presumed to be a typical trait of District 3. In the films, Beetee was the only tribute from the district not to have this characteristic.
- Although it's still one of the wealthier districts, District 3's living attitude is poor, and is the poorer of the wealthier districts, and typically don't do well in the Games.
- According to The Hunger Games Adventures, District 3 is located directly to the west of District 12.
- According to the Capitol.pn, District 3 has twelve factories in operation, and a population of 195,329, making it the third-largest district, in terms of population.
- It was one of the first districts to rebel during the 2nd rebellion, along with Districts 1, 8, and 11. District 3 was the 2nd - 4th district to pry from Capitol rules and eventually, they became the third district to do so.
- According to the Capitol.PN, District 3 claims 62,991 in tesserae, making it the fifth richest district.
- If the population is 195,329 and they claim 62,991 tesserae, it would equal to 0.322 tesserae per person, making it the 6th richest district.
- Based on the arena wear for the 74th Hunger Games, the district's color seems to be palomino beige (#ba7e48 – ).[22]
