Chariot costumes were outfits created by stylists and worn by tributes during the chariot rides. These outfits were themed after their districts' main industries.[1]

History[]

General trends[]

District Industry Additional notes
1 Luxury goods[1] Their tributes were always favorites at the parade.[1]
2 Masonry[2]
3 Technology[3]
4 Fishing[1]
5 Power[4][5]
6 Transportation
7 Lumber[6] The District 7 stylist dressed her tributes as trees for forty years.[6]
8 Textiles[7]
9 Grain
10 Livestock[6]
11 Agriculture[1]
12 Coal mining[8]
  • New stylists often ended up creating looks for 12, which was seen as the least desirable district.[1]
  • Coal miners' baggy jumpsuits weren't flattering, so tributes usually wore skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps.[1]
  • One year, their tributes were completely naked and covered in black powder to represent coal dust. These costumes did nothing to gain the audience's favor.[1]

50th Hunger Games[]

The 50th Hunger Games was the second Quarter Quell, so as a cruel twist, twice the number of tributes were reaped for the Hunger Games: two boys and two girls from each district, for a total of 48.[3] In the parade, Haymitch Abernathy, Maysilee Donner, and the two other unnamed tributes from 12— one male and one female— all wore the typical coal miners' outfits.[9] No other costumes were described.

74th Hunger Games[]

For the 74th Hunger Games' opening ceremonies, Marvel and Glimmer from District 1 were spray-painted silver and dressed in "tasteful tunics, glittering with jewels."[1]

"In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire off the flowing capes. Cinna was right about the minimal makeup, we both look more attractive but utterly recognizable."

In his first year as a stylist, Cinna and his partner Portia dressed Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in matching outfits meant to represent burning coal. The tributes wore black unitards and leather boots, with capes and matching headpieces made of streams of yellow, orange, and red. These capes were lit with synthetic fire using a torch, and later extinguished with a canister. Katniss and Peeta's costumes outshone everybody else's, making them instant standouts.[1] This also earned Katniss her nickname as the "Girl on Fire."[10]

75th Hunger Games[]

"Kids in costumes are silly, but aging victors, it turns out, are pitiful.... the majority, who are in the clutches of drink or morphling or illness, look grotesque in their costumes, depicting cows and trees and loaves of bread."
—Katniss's observations on the opening ceremonies[src]

Cinna and Portia's stunt with the fire the year before inspired a number of copycats to illuminate their own tributes' costumes for the 75th Hunger Games' Tribute Parade. District 3 victors Beetee Latier and Wiress wore outfits studded with electric lights, and District 10's tributes were dressed as cows in flaming belts.[6] Additionally, an unknown district's tributes were dressed like loaves of bread;[11] this was presumably District 9 or District 11, since both had food-producing industries.

Katniss noted that some of the younger victors, like Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason, or physically fitter victors, like Seeder and Brutus, were able to maintain their dignity in their costumes.[11] Finnick was draped in a golden net strategically knotted at the groin for modesty, but he was "about as close as you can get" to being naked. Johanna wore a headdress of leafy branches, a tree costume with a zipper, and forest green slippers. She later stripped out of her costume while waiting for the elevator at the Training Center.[6]

District 12 (75th HG)[]

Katniss and Peeta's faces were covered with dramatic highlights and dark shadows to bring out the edges. They wore a black jumpsuit from the neck down and half of a heavy crown made out of black medal, similar to the ones they had been given as victors of the previous Games. When a button inside the fabric was pressed, the costume would illuminate and perfectly mimic the changing colors of glowing embers. Combined, the elements of the costume made Katniss and Peeta look intimidating, powerful, and deadly.[6]

Trivia[]

  • In The Hunger Games film, Katniss and Peeta's CGI flames were designed to look like wings.[12]
  • In that same film, the District 7 tributes wore fan-like origami paper headdresses and paper clothes, rather than the usual tree costumes described in Catching Fire.[4]
