Cayson McCoy is a coal miner and the older brother of Louella McCoy.[1]

Biography[]

The McCoys lived three houses down from Haymitch Abernathy in the Seam, and his younger sister Louella was one of two female tributes reaped for the 50th Hunger Games.[2] When Plutarch Heavensbee made them stay to stage reaction shots after the reaping, they refused to give him what he wanted, staring at him with "stony" expressions.[3]

When Cayson wasn't working in the mines, he was known to gamble, but he had a special distaste for the Booker Boys, who took and placed bets on tributes in the Hunger Games. He once told Louella that all the gamblers learned coin tricks so they could covertly signal to others when a game was on. Another time, he spit at the mention of Jethro Callow and said he "didn’t have no truck with people who made money on dead kids."[1]

Coming home late one night, he was the person who spotted the Abernathys' house burning and "shouted to wake the dead", rousing everyone to help. At the funeral of Willamae Abernathy and her son Sid Abernathy, he had his hands and face bandaged, and he spit on Jethro Callow's grave. At some point, he mentioned to his mother that a Peacekeeper he knew told him that Lenore Dove Baird was set to have a hearing with the base commander that day.[4]

Family[]

Cayson is one of Louella's "half dozen" brothers and sisters. Aside from Louella, only two were of reaping age.[3] He also had a sister named Ima McCoy, who was older than Louella.[4]
