Arena wear was the clothing worn by tributes during their time in the arena. The clothing was new and identical for each tribute. The stylists had no say in the tributes' uniforms, but were often able to use the clothing's composition to provide clues regarding what might be encountered in the arena.[1] Tributes could also wear or carry a personal token in the arena, as long as it didn't give them an unfair advantage in the Games.[2]
Known arena wear[]
10th Hunger Games[]
Since the Hunger Games were not fleshed out in detail in the beginning, the tributes of the 10th Hunger Games did not have standardized or specialized clothes for the arena. The tributes wore whatever they had on at the reaping, which they also wore through the days leading up to the Games. Because of this, most of the tributes’ clothes were worn and improper for the event.
District | Tribute | Arena wear |
---|---|---|
7 | Lamina | A flour sack dress belted with rope, no shoes[3] |
8 | Wovey | A striped dress and red scarf[4][5] |
11 | Reaper Ash | Patched burlap clothing, no shoes[4] |
Dill | Barefoot[4] | |
12 | Lucy Gray Baird | Ruffled rainbow dress with a raspberry pink, royal blue, and daffodil yellow skirt. It also had pockets,[6] and it once belonged to her mother.[7] |
74th Hunger Games[]
For the 74th Hunger Games, the outfits were tawny trousers, a light green shirt, sturdy brown belt, and a thin-hooded black jacket that fell down to the thighs. The jacket was designed to reflect heat, as the nights would grow cold in the arena. The outfit also included boots, which were worn over skin-tight socks. The boots were made of soft leather and had a narrow, flexible rubber sole with treads, which were good for running.[1]
The Hunger Games film[]
In the movie, the arena uniforms differ slightly from the ones described in the book. All tributes wore olive cargo pants, brown buckle boots, and a hooded nylon jacket with silver stripes that ran down the front, the arms, and back; the jacket also had an inner layer that had an orange reflective tape on the hem. Jackets and shirts (V-necks for the girls, crew necks for the boys) were color-coded according to district.[8]
- District 1: Overgrown Citadel Green
- District 2: Red Oxide
- District 3: Palomino Beige
- District 4: Plantation Teal
- District 5: Ripe Eggplant Brown
- District 6: Hello Fall Orange
- District 7: Ironstone Brown
- District 8: Dark Buff Leather Brown
- District 9: Log Cabin Green
- District 10: Donkey Brown Gray
- District 11: Cocoa Brown
- District 12: Black
News reel[]
The first film briefly showed news reel footage of two tributes from a previous year (thought to be the 73rd Hunger Games, corresponding with details from the original script). Both tributes in this scene wore black shoes, black cargo pants, and black, cropped armored vests underneath their colorful jackets. These appear to correspond with the district color coding: red with black stripes for District 2, and gray-brown with yellow stripes for District 10.[9]
75th Hunger Games[]
For the 75th Hunger Games, the outfits were fitted blue jumpsuits made of sheer material that zippered down the front. Each suit came with a six-inch-wide padded belt covered in purple plastic, which was filled with a purple gel that could be used as a flotation device. The shoes were nylon with rubber soles.[10]
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire[]
In the movie, every tribute wore the same outfit: a black wetsuit with short white sleeves, though longer, removable black sleeves covered the rest of the arm. The use of black, white, and grey were supposed to represent a mockingjay. The outfit didn't come with a padded belt, and they wore black boots.[11]
