Katniss and Rue form an alliance.

Alliances were an important aspect of the Hunger Games, as tributes could survive longer by having allies to watch their backs in the arena. Allies usually shared food and weapons and helped each other stay alive. Alliances generally broke apart near the end of the Games so the members would not have to feel so much guilt when they had to kill each other.

Common types[]

District partners[]

Main article: District partner

Alliances typically formed in the early stages of the Games,[1] often between tributes from the same district.

Career Tributes[]

Main article: Career Tribute

Another common alliance was formed between District 1, District 2, and District 4, whose children trained as Career Tributes prior to the reaping and often volunteered to fight. In the arena, they worked together to take out competition until their alliance was all that remained. At that point, they would turn on each other. This alliance was sometimes called a Career pack because of the tributes' aggressive pack-like mentality and bloodlust.[1] In the films, only Districts 1 and 2 were Career districts, excluding District 4.[2][3]

Significant alliances[]

10th Hunger Games[]

District 3 alliance[]

The District 3 tributes worked together to reactivate sponsor gift delivery drones.[4] In The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, they both died in the Cornucopia bloodbath, leaving the status of any alliance between them unknown.[5]

District 4 and 10 alliance[]

All of the tributes in this alliance displayed a familiarity with weapons from their respective districts' industries. This, paired with their teamwork, suggests that they may have been an early precursor to later Career alliances.

On the first night of the Games, Coral and Mizzen from District 4 joined forces with Tanner, the male tribute from District 10, in pursuit of Coriolanus Snow and Sejanus Plinth. This alliance lasted into the second day when they worked together to kill Lamina from District 7. Once she was dead, Mizzen and Coral ambushed Tanner.[8]

  • Mizzen - District 4 - Fell to his death trying to escape Teslee's drones, placing 5th.[7] In the film, he was killed by snake mutts and placed 4th.[5]
  • Coral - District 4 - Killed by snake mutts, placing 6th in the book[6] and 2nd in the film.[5]
  • Tanner - District 10 - First stabbed by Coral with a trident, then finished off by Mizzen with a knife. He placed 9th in the book and 8th in the film.[5]

In the film, Coral, Mizzen, and Tanner arranged their alliance prior to the Games themselves, and during a tour of the Capitol Arena, they invited Treech from District 7 to join them. He hesitated when they refused to extend the invitation to Lamina, but he quickly left her in favor of their group. He stayed with the District 4 tributes even after Lamina and Tanner's deaths.[5]

  • Treech - District 7 - Allied with other tributes in the film only. In the novel, he was bitten by a venomous snake mutt that Lucy Gray Baird brought up to his neck, and he placed 3rd.[7] In the film, she dropped rat poison on him and he inhaled it, putting him in 6th place.[5]

District 11 alliance[]

The District 11 tributes, Reaper Ash and Dill, were not allies in the novel. In the film, Reaper told Dill to stick close to him in the arena, and he protected her during the bloodbath. Later, her death enraged him to the point that he gathered all the tributes' bodies under the Panem flag and openly challenged the Capitol to punish him for rebelling.[5]

  • Dill - Succumbed to tuberculosis, placing 14th.[4] In the film, she drank from a water bottle that Lucy Gray had poisoned, placing 7th.[5]
  • Reaper Ash - Drank from a puddle Lucy Gray poisoned, placing 2nd.[7] In the film, he let the snake mutts overtake him, placing 3rd.[5]
Reaper and Lamina[]

In the novel, Reaper traded Lamina a scrap of the flag to protect her from the sun in exchange for some food. She also warned him when Coral, Mizzen, and Tanner came out into the open. When he returned to find her and Tanner dead, he appeared "unable to make sense" of their deaths. After pacing for a while, Lamina's body was the first that he moved into his makeshift morgue.[8]

  • Lamina - District 7 - Fell to her death after being attacked by Coral, Mizzen, and Tanner.[8]

District 12 alliance (10th HG)[]

Coriolanus Snow was surprised to learn about an alliance between the tributes from District 12. He commented that an alliance in the Games was impossible, so this was not something seen in the prior nine years of Hunger Games. While in captivity at the Capitol Zoo, Lucy Gray and Jessup Diggs took turns keeping watch while the other slept, and she shared her food with him in exchange for his protection.[9]

  • Jessup Diggs - Rabies made Jessup agitated and irrational, so he eventually turned on Lucy Gray. His mentor, Lysistrata Vickers, sent him sponsor gifts of water to deliberately trigger his hydrophobia, a symptom of the disease, and scare him away from his district partner. He tried to avoid the water bottles and fell to his death, placing 11th.[10]
  • Lucy Gray Baird - Victor

50th Hunger Games[]

Career alliance (50th HG)[]

The second Quarter Quell had twice the regular number of tributes,[11] resulting in a super-sized pack of ten Careers at the end of the bloodbath. They spent the first three days scouring the mountain area for victims. Despite their initial numbers advantage, only two Careers made it to the final eight.[12]

  • District 1 female - Tricked by Haymitch Abernathy into throwing her axe into the force field at the edge of the arena, killing her when the weapon rebounded. She placed 2nd out of 48.
  • Others from District 1, 2, 4, and/or other districts
    • Five unknown Careers - Killed by a volcanic eruption on day four; anywhere between 25th-14th place.
    • Two unknown Careers - Killed by Haymitch with a knife, placing 13th and 12th.
    • One unknown Career - Killed by Maysilee Donner with a poison dart from her blowgun, placing 11th.
    • One other Career - Either killed in combat or eaten by a pack of squirrel mutts, placing 4th or 3rd.

District 12 alliance (50th HG)[]

Haymitch and Maysilee, two of District 12's tributes, became allies after the volcanic eruption drove all the remaining tributes into the woods.

Unlike most other years, only three Careers made it into the final eight.

  • Marvel - District 1 - Killed by Katniss Everdeen with an arrow to the throat, placing 8th.[13]
  • Glimmer - District 1 - Killed when Katniss dropped a nest of tracker jackers onto the Careers. She placed 12th.[14]
  • Cato - District 2 - Mauled by wolf mutts, but mercy killed by Katniss with an arrow, placing 3rd.[15]
  • Clove - District 2 - Killed by Thresh with a rock, placing 6th.[16] In the film, he knocked her head against the metal Cornucopia.[2]
  • District 3 male - Not a Career, but they used him for his technical skills after Peeta left. Cato snapped his neck, putting him in 9th place.[17]
  • District 4 male - Killed in the bloodbath.[1] Not a Career in the film, where he placed 16th.[2]
  • District 4 female - Killed by tracker jackers, placing 11th.[14] Not a Career in the film, where she died soon after the bloodbath.[2]
  • Peeta Mellark - District 12 - Not a Career, but they let him join so he could lead them to Katniss.[18] In reality, Peeta was trying to mislead them and protect her.[19] After she dropped the tracker jacker nest, he openly betrayed them and broke away from the pack.[14]

Katniss's alliance[]

Katniss's first ally was Rue, and the two became good friends in a short period of time. Katniss sang Rue a lullaby as she died, and she grieved for her for a long time after.[13] Eventually, Katniss reunited with Peeta, and they resumed their onscreen romance,[20] which grew into something more authentic over time. Katniss also had an unspoken alliance with Thresh, who saved her from Clove at the feast. He then spared Katniss because she had been Rue's ally.[16]

  • Thresh - District 11 - Unspoken alliance with Katniss. Killed by Cato in the book, placing 5th,[21] or by wolf mutts in the film, placing 4th.[2]
  • Rue - District 11 - Netted and speared by Marvel, placing 7th.[13]
  • Peeta Mellark - District 12 - Co-victor; allied with Katniss after Rue's death[20]
  • Katniss Everdeen - District 12 - Co-victor

District 4 forwent the usual Career alliance this year, leaving a smaller Career pack of four tributes from Districts 1 and 2.

Rebel alliance[]

This was the largest known alliance with at least 12 members. Tributes from Districts 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 conspired to protect Katniss and Peeta at any cost. Their goal was to break open the force field surrounding the 75th Hunger Games arena, so the pair could be extracted to District 13 for the rebel cause.[24]

Core members[]

Katniss and Peeta allied with Finnick Odair and Mags Flanagan at the Cornucopia.[25] After Mags died, the three were joined by Johanna Mason, who brought Beetee Latier and Wiress for Katniss.[26]

Other rebels[]
  • District 6 female - Killed by monkey mutts in defense of Peeta, placing 14th.[26]
  • Blight - District 7 - Johanna explained that he had been with her, Beetee, and Wiress before they met up with Katniss's group. He died when he accidentally hit the force field, placing 16th.[26]
  • Cecelia - District 8 - Killed in the bloodbath.[28] According to actress Elena Sánchez, she was stabbed in the back[29] by Enobaria.[30]
  • Chaff - District 11 - Killed by Brutus in front of Peeta, placing 8th.[23]
  • Seeder - District 11 - Bloodbath[28]
