"It took about a week for his competitors to realize that he was the one to kill, but it was too late."
Katniss Everdeen on Finnick Odair during his Hunger Games[src]

The 65th Hunger Games took place nine years prior to the start of the trilogy. They were won by Finnick Odair, the male tribute from District 4, when he was only fourteen years old, making him the youngest victor in the history of the Games.[1]

Summary[]

Known tributes[]

The Games[]

Finnick was a Career Tribute, so he may have been a part of a typical Career alliance. He fought well with the spears and knives he found in the Cornucopia. While other tributes struggled to get even small sponsor gifts, Finnick "never wanted for anything, not food or medicine or weapons"; he drew in many sponsors with his good looks and fighting skills.[1]

It took "about a week" for the other tributes to realize that Finnick was the one to beat. He received a trident as a sponsor gift, which had been extremely expensive, and he used it as if it was a "natural, deadly extension of his arm." Finnick was able to weave nets out of vines he'd found in the arena, entangling opponents before spearing them with his new weapon. In a matter of days, he was crowned the victor.[1]

Aftermath[]

After winning, Finnick was highly desired by Capitol citizens, but they "couldn't really touch him for a year or two". At age sixteen, Finnick began to go through "four or five" Capitol suitors with each of his annual visits for the Games. This gave him a reputation as a playboy as he was showered with gifts and attention.[1] Finnick later revealed that he had actually been forced into sex trafficking by President Snow.[3]
